Why do Strategic Planning Now?
-
ICMA’s most recent Strategic Plan was adopted in 2008. Since that time, the environment has changed for local governments, the profession, and the association. ICMA’s Executive Director, Bob O’Neill, will retire from the association in late 2016, and a new Executive Director will be announced at the 2016 Annual Conference in Kansas City.
-
This is an ideal time for the development of a new Strategic Plan to shape the future of ICMA. The strategic planning effort is critical to ensuring ICMA is relevant and well-situated to support members, communities and the profession as the world around us continues to evolve.
-
In the past, strategic plans have been used to re-organize ICMA, to spark new initiatives, to determine budget priorities, and to identify policies that need to be created or revamped. The 2015-2017 Strategic Planning Task Force has been charged with the responsibility of developing an actionable plan that describes the organization’s strategies for achieving its vision and mission and outlines how these strategies should be implemented. ICMA’s Executive Board and staff will use the Strategic Plan to guide their decision making and the work of the association. In 2015, a diverse group of members began the work of crafting the plan. That work will continue through 2016.
